New Context out: ‘Floorscape –The heritage at our feet’ and much more, from Listing’s 70th anniversary to Student Awards

Context 152The latest edition of the IHBC’s membership journal Context is now out, themed around traditional paving and its contribution to our experience of places, with Robert Huxford of the Urban Design Group (UDG) as guest commissioning editor for the theme, and with articles also ranging from Listing’s 70th anniversary to IHBC Student Award-winning research.

Robert Huxford writes:

‘Like vernacular buildings, traditional paving -in stone brick and even iron – can tell us much about local distinctiveness and Britain’s complex geology. But that heritage is being degraded by different stone types being mixed inappropriately, or arbitrarily sourced types of stone being introduced that were never used locally or are used in non-traditional ways. We need to identify the different types of material used in traditional paving, and the techniques used in laying it; and we need to record what we have. The more we look down the more we realise the value of the heritage at our feet.’

Articles in the latest issue, No.152, will feature in future News-Blogs and social media posts, with themed content covering topics and authors such as:

  • Britain’s historic paving; Richard Guise, David Harrison and Robert Huxford
  • Floors of the great medieval churches; David Harrison
  • Iron, glass and wood underfoot; Rob Cowan
  • Bath Abbey’s geothermal floor; Daisy Nelson and Sarah Richardson; and
  • A glossary of paving; Rob Cowan

As usual themed issues include a range of other content, this time including:

  • Listing’s 70th anniversary; Deborah Mays
  • Gustavo Giovannoni on planning in historic towns, Marc Piqué i Gascón, based on a submission commended in the IHBC 2016 Gus Astley Student Award; and
  • Violet Pinwill, woodcarver; Grant Elliott

Reading Context helps IHBC members develop their skills across all of the IHBC’s Areas of Competence, and so is a critical baseline in addressing priorities in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
