IHBC welcomes Carole Souter CBE as Gus Astley Student Award judge for 2017: Master of St Cross College, Oxford and past CE of HLF

The IHBC is delighted to welcome Carole Souter CBE as the judge for the 2017 IHBC Gus Astley Student Awards, now Master of St Cross College, Oxford and former Chief Executive (CE) of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Carole Souter said: ‘It is a great honour for me to judge the 2017 Gus Astley Student Award.  I look forward very much to immersing myself in the educational and research priorities that the historic and built environment conservation professionals in the IHBC seek to celebrate.’

IHBC Chair James Caird said: ‘We feel very privileged to have Carole serve as this year’s judge for our increasingly prestigious annual Gus Astley Student Awards.  The award is open to outstanding items of taught-coursework, and encourages the promotion of best practice, raises standards, and helps those in the early stages of their careers.’

‘Carole’s background in heritage planning, management and funding aligns perfectly with the priorities of the IHBC’s own members, especially as they promote the historic environment as a driver for urban and rural regeneration.’

‘Our Student Awards celebrate a corresponding excellence in conservation–related course work by students on UK courses.  As a Trustee of Historic Royal Palaces and the Oxford Preservation Trust, Carole is particularly interested in the governance of the sector just now.  This, alongside her legacy in the conservation and heritage sector – including as past Director of Planning and Development at the former English Heritage – means she is perfectly placed to address the challenges of being our Awards judge for 2017.’
