IHBC 2019 Student Awards judge announced: Ben Cowell, Historic Houses DG, to select the Gus Astley Student Awards for 2020 Brighton School presentations… #IHBCBrighton2020

Ben Cowell, Director General of Historic Houses –  which represents the nation’s largest collection of independently owned historic houses and gardens – will serve as the guest judge on the 2019 IHBC Gus Astley Student Award submissions, with winners receiving certificates and cash prizes at the IHBC’s Brighton 2020 School on 19 June next year.

Ben Cowell as GASA Judge: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to be the judge for the IHBC’s 2019 Gus Astley Student Award.  The Award recognises excellence in research at the cutting-edge of historic environment conservation, and it will be a genuine pleasure to engage with this year’s entries and to hear about the diverse approaches and issues currently being explored.’

Bob Kindred, Chair of the Gus Astley Trustees said: ‘I am delighted that Ben has agreed to be Institute’s Guest Judge for the 2019 Awards. Ben is the Director General of Historic Houses and was formerly involved with Social and Economic Policy Research at English Heritage and the East Anglia Regional Director of the National Trust.’

‘Having made an overview of the submissions, it is evident to me that many of the candidates this year have demonstrated a clear sightedness and undertaken thorough research into under-regarded aspects of heritage policy and practice.  I am sure Ben will find the adjudication on the submissions a rewarding experience.’

‘I’ve known Ben for nearly 20 years and we have intermittently followed and communicated on the fluctuating fortunes of the local football team we both support.’

Andrew Shepherd, Chair IHBC Education Committee, said: ‘I’m also delighted that the Gus Astley Trustees have managed to persuade Ben to be the Guest Judge. His breadth of experiences during his career to date will ensure a thorough and informed review of the submissions – good luck to him, and to all those submitting’.
