IHBC’s 2020 Virtual School now booking: ‘OLD TOWNS | NEW FUTURES’, Heritage reflections and speculations from a pandemic, June 19, online and interactive, sessions starting at £15+VAT

With some speakers agreed – including architect Carl Elefante, 94th President of The American Institute of Architects – and delegate places limited, booking has been opened on the IHBC’s CPD highlight for 2020, our ‘Virtual School’, as we look ahead to our Brighton 2021 School by featuring lead authorities exploring ‘OLD TOWNS | NEW FUTURES’ theme, now reflecting and speculating on the heritage impacts of the pandemic, with single session fees starting at £15+ VAT for IHBC members.

Speakers provisionally agreed across the planned pair of sessions include:

  • Carl Elefante, 94th President, The American Institute of Architects
  • Carol Souter, Master of St Cross College, Oxford, former Chief Executive of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Currently chair of the Planning Committee of the Oxford Preservation Trust, and previously guest judge for the IHBC’s Gus Astley Student Award.
  • Cliff Hague, past president of RTPI and Emeritus Professor of Planning and Spatial Development at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and Chair of Edinburgh’s civic trust, The Cockburn Association.
  • Adala Leeson, Head of Socio-Economic Analysis and Evaluation at Historic England
  • Kris Declercq, Burgemeester (Mayor) of Roeselare, Flanders, Belgium, and president of the ‘West-Vlaamse Intercommunale’

The IHBC writes:

How the current pandemic will shape historic urban areas and their surrounding communities across the globe is impossible to tell, at least as yet.  But, as specialists, communities and stakeholders, we need to reflect on the implications for our current – possibly now even historic – approaches to caring for valued places, and even speculate on future strategies and responses.

The IHBC’s 2020 Virtual School follows the same celebrated model of all of our annual conferences, as it brings together leading authorities and representatives from across and beyond the world of heritage, conservation, government and development to address the most current of issues.  For 2020 our only sensible choice is to explore, as best we can from the inside, issues around the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our 2020 Virtual School offers speakers and delegates a platform to engage with this most dramatic of situations.  We want to scope out the issues as best we can, taking the widest perspective possible.  We hope to inspire effective responses to the complex and diverse challenges that, globally, now confront our local places, communities and heritage.

So join us online, on 19 June, as the IHBC’s 2020 Virtual School explores the topic of ‘OLD TOWNS | NEW FUTURES’, through both reflections on where we are, and speculations on where we might be heading.
