The Victorian Society writes:

‘A Passion for Pattern: Victorian Wallpapers’ by Joanna Banham, £5.00 – Thursday 27th August – 7pm

We are excited to announce that curator and author Joanna Banham will be delving into the colourful history of Victorian wallpapers in our next online lecture, A Passion for Pattern: Victorian Wallpapers on Thursday 27th August.

The Victorian period witnessed massive changes in the manufacture and consumption of wallpaper: a product that had previously been a luxury item became available to all but the very poorest of homes. It also saw a huge proliferation of different styles that included glamorous French-inspired florals, severe geometric Gothic designs, trompe l’ceil architectural, mosaic, and stone effects, and the innovative work of Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. Joanna will discuss features such as nursery designs, relief decorations, arsenical pigments, and explore the many different ways that wallpaper was used in the decoration of the Victorian home.

Joanna Banham has over 25-years of experience in the arts, having curated historic wallpaper collections at the Whitworth Gallery and Arthur Sanderson & Sons, directing and creating public programmes, and working in a curatorial capacity. Joanna has worked for a number of renowned organisations such as the V&A, Tate Britain and the Royal Academy and is now the Director of the Victorian Society of America Summer School and lectures regularly for the Arts Society and many universities.

Please note, should you be unavailable to watch the lecture live, you can still purchase a ticket and watch the lecture at a later time – included in the ticket price is a link to watch a replay of the lecture at your leisure.

‘The Pub Unwrapped and the Golden Age of Pub-Building’ by Geoff Brandwood, £5.00 – Wednesday 9th September – 7pm

The Philharmonic in Liverpool… is the first and only Victorian pub to receive a Grade I listing. This is the crowning achievement of a glorious pub-building boom at the end of the nineteenth century.

We are excited to have architectural historian Geoff Brandwood taking us on a virtual exploration of our Victorian pubs in our online lecture on Wednesday 9th September. Geoff will be taking a look at one of our great British institutions and their historic fabrics. From small country pubs and old inns, he will show how the pub as we know it was essentially a Victorian creation with a truly magnificent flowering in the closing years of the nineteenth century. Geoff has co-authored and edited a number of books on pubs, as well has being heavily involved with the Victorian Society for many years. He has played a key role in the Campaign for Real Ale’s fight to preserve historic pub interiors.

Please note, should you be unable to watch the lecture live, you can still purchase a ticket and watch the lecture at a later time – included in the ticket price is a link to watch a replay of the lecture at your leisure.
