The 2020-21 RSA Student Design Awards competition is officially open for entries. There’s still time to tackle one of the 8 design briefs in this year’s competition, which challenges participants to apply their skills and creativity to tackle today’s most pressing social and environmental issues. This year’s awards include over £22,000 in cash prizes and paid industry placements, and all of the briefs are open to entries from:

  • Currently enrolled students studying on any recognised higher education course, anywhere in the world
  • Recent graduates, who graduated in or after March 2020
  • Individual and team entries – the fee is per entry, not per person

The design categories are as follows:

  • Redistributing health: How might we design systems that provide seamless and cost-effective access to quality health services for underserved communities?
  • A new leaf : How might we utilise local woodland resources to stimulate inclusive and sustainable economic activity?
  • Bridging the divide: How might we harness social media to bridge societal divides by supporting social connection, collective action and reducing polarisation?
  • The right to breathe: How might we ensure that everyone living in areas with poor air quality is guaranteed their right to clean air?
  • Material world: How might we apply biomimicry to create textiles, processes or systems that enhance nature?
  • Home sweet home: How might we harness age-friendly design to ‘future-proof’ homes so they are sustainable, safe and inclusive places to live and enjoy?
  • For the long time: How might we encourage people and community to think and act for the long term?
  • Moving pictures: Conceive and produce an animation to accompany one of the two selected audio files that will clarify, energise and illuminate the content
  • Global bursary: A needs-based bursary for international students to cover the cost of the SDA submission fee. Closes 21 February 2021.

Take a look at the Rules and Guidelines for further info about submissions and eligibility. We cannot wait to see your entries this year! RSA Student Design Awards Team. Submit now via www.thersa.org/sda
