Griff Rhys Jones ‘in conversation’ at IHBC’s ‘blended’ 2022 Aberdeen School: On film, on heritage ‘on the edge’, and more… with delegate options outlined as booking opens 15 March!

The IHBC is delighted to announce that the 2022 Aberdeen School will include a special film with Griff Rhys Jones ‘in conversation’ with the IHBC, broadcasting to virtual and in-person delegates at the ‘blended’ Day School on 17 June, with attendance options now explained and booking to open on 15 March.

The IHBC’s 2022 Aberdeen School conference looks at ‘Heritage on the Edge’.  It examines how practitioners and stakeholders can and should manage change to the most challenging of heritage.  That heritage may be ‘on the edge’ for any of many reasons, including geography, technology, changing taste, new environmental awareness etc.

We are delighted that Griff Rhys Jones – President of the Victorian Society, among his many other roles –  will explore the challenges of conserving Victorian and other heritage that is  ‘on the edge’, in a recorded conversation with the IHBC’s Chair David McDonald.’

IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘Almost from the start Victorian architecture has been on the edge – of taste, of engineering, of social progress and more – so Griff’s practical perspective offers an excellent start to the day, for in-person and virtual delegates alike.’

‘… conservation is about the future, and that conservation is there ‘to help manage change….’

Griff Rhys Jones said: ‘I wrote in my introduction to the IHBC’s 2020 Yearbook that ‘I believe more than anything that conservation is about the future’, and that conservation is there ‘to help manage change.’

‘I am delighted to explore these matters further in conversation with the IHBC, and help shape discussions at its 2022 Aberdeen School in June.’

IHBC’s Chair David McDonald said: ‘I’m really looking forward to my visit to the ‘Granite City’, not only because I’m Scottish, but also because there will be much for us to learn about heritage protection and practice ‘on the edge’.’

‘While we have had two very successful virtual annual schools in 2020 and 2021, it is exciting to be having an in-person event this year. I look forward to meeting those delegates who can make to Aberdeen and sharing the experience with those who attend online.’

IHBC writes:

The final details of our hybrid 2022 School programme are still being planned.  Clearly, as we all contend with the legacy, logistics and variables of the pandemic, the IHBC needs to have flexibility as much as learning and accessibility at the heart of our planning.

In response, trustees have agreed that as things stand we need to limit in-person attendance very carefully.  School places for delegates attending ‘in person’ are very restricted, and allocated on a ‘first booking’ basis.  However this is more than compensated for by the open access and low costs access offered to our ‘Virtual delegates’ attending online.

Those coming to Aberdeen to attend the Full School programme – from 16 June – can join the Friday Day School ‘in-person’, as well as day tours on Thursday and Saturday, and our annual dinner – supported by Aberdeen City Council – and a Thursday evening drinks reception.  Day School in-person attendance on 17 June is limited to the day programme with no dinner, reception or other options.

As places are necessarily extremely limited, booking early is critical.  Also, Full School delegates this year must arrange their own accommodation.  So, as refunds are even more restricted for 2022, before committing to the costs of a Full School place, please do consider carefully what delegate options suit you best, as regards travel and accommodation options, costs, prospects of programme cancelation and change etc.

Our School website gives useful preliminary links and guidance to explore options and arrangements, and there’s lots more on other web sites too.

‘And don’t forget that both virtual and in-person delegates are invited to the IHBC’s learning-led and virtual School Heritage MarketPlace, on Wednesday afternoon and evening.’
