DCLG releases planning performance league table

England’s government has published a league table of local authorities’ performance on determining planning applications as part of its proposal to introduce a 12 month ‘planning guarantee’ for decision making.

These statistics indicated that out of 315 authorities who responded in every quarter of 2011-12 three authorities (one per cent) determined all of their planning applications within 26 weeks. This rises to 19 authorities determining more than 99.5 per cent of applications in this time.

Some 278 (88 per cent) planning authorities decided more than 95 per cent of cases within 26 weeks.

For major applications, 12 authorities (four per cent) decided 100 per cent of major applications within 26 weeks, while 20 (six per cent) decided more than 95 per cent of majors within 26 weeks (figures rounded to nearest percentage point).

The statistics showed that the Planning Inspectorate decided 13,752 qualifying appeals within 26 weeks in 2011-12 (97 per cent).
