Southbank undercroft gets Localism Act listing

Lambeth Council has agreed to the listing of the Undercroft, the iconic skateboarding area on London’s Southbank, as an Asset of Community Value (ACV).

Skateboards and graffiti artists are campaigning to safeguard the area earmarked for redevelopment as part of major plans to redevelop the Southbank complex. As well as getting the area listed as an ACV, the campaigners are hoping to have the Undercroft registered as a town green.

The Southbank Centre is considering whether to challenge the ACV listing. In a statement it said: ‘We have always recognised the importance of skateboarding at Southbank Centre, as recognised by our plan to provide an alternative, permanent space 120 meters away that has also been used for skating. And our request to Lambeth Council for more time was granted earlier this month to allow us to review our scheme – specifically the skate space – with our communities. ‘
