IHBC features ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: … the moment Hull’s historic Time Ball dropped for the first time in a century

The Guildhall Time Ball, originally constructed between 1915 and 1916, is the highest in the UK and Hull’s historic golden Time Ball has dropped for the first time in more than a century, reports Hull Live.

Situated at the top of The Guildhall’s clock tower 196ft (60m) above the ground, the timepiece was last in operation in 1922 having originally been installed between April 1915 and November 1916. It played a key role in helping ships’ navigators tell the time on the Humber and River Hull by dropping at 1pm in the summer.

After a major refurb to the mechanics and the ball itself funded by Hull City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the 24-carat ball is fully functioning again. At 1pm today (June 29), the Time Ball dropped once again…

Children worked to create a new piece of music to be played on the Guildhall carillon. Pupils created their original compositions on glockenspiels and these compositions have been combined to create the final piece to be played on the Guildhall’s carillon bells….
