IHBC welcomes CHN update: ‘Taking Culture and Heritage’s Climate Advocacy to the Next Level’

The IHBC, a member of the Climate Heritage Network (CHN), has welcomed the CHN update on the 2023 UN Climate Change conference (COP28) in Dubai, hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and running from 30/11 to 12/12.

… new global Campaign that aims to secure a decision at COP28 on enhancing the treatment of culture in climate policy…

CHN writes:

Last year at the 2023 UN Climate Change conference (COP27), cultural voices broke new ground in gaining recognition for the role of culture and heritage in tackling climate change. This year, for COP28, CHN members are working to push our engagement to the next level  – moving from networking and awareness raising to securing a political and policy victory that would for the first time valorise culture in international climate policy frameworks.

The CHN Culture at COP28 Working Group is pleased to share with you an update on that work.

During the summer, the Working Group under the leadership of HRH Princess Dana Firas (Petra National Trust) and Arch. Moe Moe Lwin (Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance/SEACHA) worked in collaboration with groups around the world as well as with the COP28 host country in order to take these efforts forward. These efforts have been supported by Europa Nostra, Co-Chair of the CHN’s Europe Region.

What is emerging is a Call to Put Culture at the Heart of Climate Action – an exciting new global Campaign that aims to secure a decision at COP28 on enhancing the treatment of culture in climate policy – culminating, we hope, in the adoption of a new UNFCCC workplan on culture, heritage, and climate action at COP29, which is expected to be held in in 2024 in Europe.

The Working Group, with the leadership of Julie’s Bicycle, has now produced a discussion draft of the Campaign. This document includes a sign-on letter and FAQs as well as talking points and other information….

… The European region of the CHN, which is partnering on the Forum, cordially invites colleagues from around the world to join the Forum via livestream. The streaming will start at 10am CEST on 28 September.  To watch the free livestream, simply visit the Europa Nostra website. The Forum livestream will include a moderated chat where you can share your suggestions on the Campaign.

Once the Campaign is finalised in mid-October, we hope you and your organisation will sign on.

The effort to build a viable campaign to achieve a political decision at COP28 to put culture at the heart of climate planning and policy is an exciting and new journey for the CHN and for the culture sector.  Thank you for your energy and your passion for this issue.
