A couple have been hit with £6K court bill and told to tear down their garden extension after protected trees were removed to extend the garden of the property, reports Birmingham Live.

Birmingham Live writes:

A Stourbridge couple found themselves on the wrong side of the law with their home improvements. Protected trees were removed to extend the garden of their Wordsley property, which resulted in a whopping £6,515 court bill…

… District Judge Barnes said during the hearing: ‘Planning rules are in place for a number of reasons; to protect environment and habitat. Your intention in removing the trees was to develop the land…. It was your responsibility to ensure that what you were doing was lawful… Failure to comply with an enforcement notice can lead to a costly day in court.’
