IHBC NW support in ‘Strategy and Legacy’ for Liverpool’s Albert Dock

IHBC North West (NW) Branch has contributed to a new strategy that sets out ambitions over the next five years to create a legacy for Liverpool’s Albert Dock that adds a tourism asset to the Liverpool City Region and demonstrates the estate is constantly evolving and changing to offer new experiences, for new and existing audiences.

Katie Wray, IHBC NW Branch Events co-ordinator and RTPI NW Chair, said: ‘This is a really exciting opportunity to work with other professions to celebrate and explore the lessons learnt from heritage led regeneration. The Albert Dock is an iconic example and we hope our efforts will help them celebrate their 175 year anniversary in 2021.’

This strategy is an exciting opportunity for the Dock estate to throw down the gauntlet, add to the attraction and remind its peers locally, regionally, nationally and internationally that it is pioneering, game changing, show stopping and award winning.  The Albert Dock is working with a total of 13 other built environment professional institutions.  IHBC’s North West branch is leading a series of joint inter-pro lectures to celebrate the lessons learnt from the Albert Dock as part of its 175 celebrations.

The Strategy states:

‘This strategy is an exciting opportunity for the Dock estate to throw down the gauntlet, add to the attraction and remind its peers locally, regionally, nationally and internationally that it is pioneering, game changing, show stopping and award winning.

The objectives are to:

  • Work in partnership with Culture Liverpool, Tate Liverpool and Liverpool Biennial to commission a show stopping commission that is a permanent creative installation for the Dock
  • Celebrate the Tate’s 30th birthday and the 10th Liverpool Biennial in 2018
  • Provide a platform for local artists and cultural organisations to deliver activity as part of the fabric of the city e.g. Liverpool Biennial, Open Culture (including Light Night), Lantern Company
  • Develop and realise the vision to develop the public realm and waterspace
  • Develop inspiring unique events orientated around authenticity and originality linked to Dock heritage
  • Create an engaging experience for visitors all year round
  • Unlock the heritage of the Dock for all visitors to experience and enjoy when they walk onto the estate through digital or physical means
  • Maximize the opportunity presented by HLF funding through delivery of a specific action plan and become a case study for private sector engagement
  • Utilise the opportunity presented by Open Heritage Month to raise awareness of the Dock’s history
  • Become a thought leader on leisure, tourism and regeneration locally, regionally and nationally by showcasing estate management and place making best practice
  • Work with the city’s educational and professional built environment institutions on a series of events that showcase the Dock as a pioneer and celebrate its unique assets
  • Develop in partnership with the Heseltine Institute a piece of research that details the economic contribution the Dock has made to the city over 175 years
  • Create a communities programme together with Tate Liverpool and National Museums Liverpool that engages local communities
  • Become a loved and celebrated asset for the local community with increased engagement from Liverpool residents
