Locality launches new Commission on the Future of Localism: Consultation process

locality org website 22 april 2017Locality, the link group for community-led neighbourhood organisations, has launched a new ‘Commission on the Future of Localism’ to uncover what is needed to reinvigorate local democracy and empower communities, with submission dates from 15 May.

Locality writes:

Chaired by Lord Kerslake, the President of the Local Government Association and former Head of the Civil Service, the Commission will investigate the ‘Future of Localism’ and consider how to ensure greater powers are held at a neighbourhood level and communities are fully supported to have a greater stake in their local area.

The Commission will be reviewing evidence, experiences and case studies across three key themes:

  1. The Localism Act and Community Rights: What have been the successes, barriers and challenges?
  2. Devolution: How can we achieve greater ‘onward devolution’ and power to neighbourhoods?
  3. Civil society and community infrastructure: what are the institutions, organisations and governance needed for the ‘Future of Localism’?

They are inviting responses to this written consultation from organisations and individuals with an interest in localism, communities and neighbourhoods. The remit of the Commission is to consider how to secure ‘onward devolution’ to neighbourhoods. They are particularly interested to hear recommendations, best practice and evidence around how ‘the future of Localism’ could ensure greater levels of neighbourhood-level governance and community empowerment.

You can respond to a short survey on Community Rights as part of the first phase of our consultation.

The deadline for this survey is 15 May 2017.

Please send written responses to ruth.breidenbach-roe@locality.org.uk.

It would be very helpful if you would also indicate whether you would be willing to provide further evidence to the Commission, for example through our oral evidence sessions. The deadline for evidence is the 12th June 2017. Earlier submissions are also welcome.
