Help HE tell the story of England in 100 buildings and places

HE 100 placesEngland’s historic sites were hotbeds of invention and creativity that shaped both our nation and the world beyond and Historic England (HE) invites nominations from the public.

HE writes:

England’s historic sites were hotbeds of invention and creativity that shaped both our nation and the world beyond and Historic England invites nominations from the public. There’s a tree by a house in Lincolnshire where Isaac Newton once stood, and an apple fell and lit up the future. There’s a mill in Shrewsbury that gave life to the skyscraper.  There’s a house in Stratford where the greatest playwright that ever lived was born.

Today anyone, from anywhere, can go and stand on each of these spots, and imagine. We need you to help us create a list of the 100 buildings and places that tell England’s remarkable story – and its impact on the world. A History of England will tell the story of these irreplaceable places.

Tell about your favourite places in England linked to scientific innovation or discovery. Science & Discovery nominations close 7 July; Important places connected to how transport has developed, how we travel and where we spend our leisure time; Places where we live and where we grow; Places that mark, or were marked by, wars, battles, or disasters; The buildings which house our institutions, as well as places which have witnessed civil movements, or moments of social upheaval and mobility; Nominate a place that has inspired artists, or is home to an important piece of art, or a building with special architectural significance.

The nominated place must be locatable on a map and it should be a specific building, structure, archaeological site, battlefield, tree etc. It should not be a city, town, region, ocean etc.

The nominated place doesn’t have to be well known but it should have had some impact on local, national or world history.

The nominated place can be of any age and it does not need to be on the National Heritage List for England.

The nominated place could be where an important historical event has happened, for example the Banqueting House in London where Charles I was executed.

OR it could be where a societal trend has emerged, for example the Flamingo nightclub in London where ska music was first popularised in England

OR it could be where a scientific discovery was made, for example the Manchester laboratory where the atom was first split

The nominated place could have been part of our national life for generations
