Architects, surveyors, engineers, craftspeople looking for an immersive hands-on-learning experience may apply for Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) 2019 Scholarships or Fellowships prior to December 1.

Training, sharing knowledge and helping people to develop their practical skills have always been at the heart of the SPAB’s work. Our renowned Scholarship and Fellowship schemes and new Millwrighting apprenticeship continue the practice established by the SPAB’s co-founder, architect Philip Webb, of training building specialists and craftspeople on site.
Since 1930 the SPAB’s Lethaby Scholarship has offered an unrivalled training opportunity to architects, surveyors and structural engineers in the early stages of their career to travel countrywide together, learning on site from architects and specialist craftspeople working in building conservation.
Three or four Scholarships are awarded each year, depending on funding. There is no course fee and Scholars will receive a bursary in the region of £8600 to cover basic travel and living costs. Supplementary finance is usually required. Running between March and December, the nine-month full-time programme is highly rewarding but intensive (including some weekends) and it is not possible to combine it with work or other forms of study. The majority of the nine-month programme is undertaken on site through visits guided by experts, with support from a SPAB mentor. Scholars observe and experience traditional techniques and sympathetic repair in situ and visit structures of every age, size and style.
The SPAB’s William Morris Craft Fellowship is a unique annual scheme designed to broaden the skills and experience of craftspeople from any trade who work in the repair of historic buildings. The programme gives Fellows the chance to travel countrywide together and learn on site from specialist craftspeople, architects and contractors working in building conservation.
Three or four Fellowships are awarded each year, depending on funding. There is no course fee and Fellows will receive a bursary in the region of £6000 to cover basic travel and living costs. Supplementary finance is usually required. CITB grant funding may also be available for employers registered with CITB at least 12 months prior to the Fellowship programme.
