cartoonIf you have too little time to read all that post crossing your desk or inbox then you can boost your knowledge (and that of your colleagues’, if you share) by reviewing the regular column piece ‘Periodically’ by Bob Kindred in IHBC’s Context journal, which offers ‘bite sized’ summaries from the best of current conservation and heritage periodicals and handbooks.

Context’s ‘Periodically’ rounds up a selection of industry publications relating to historic environment news, while for example the September 2018 issue (IHBC Annual School, Belfast) highlights:

  • Four peer reviewed papers on Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings are discussed. Gustav Leijonhufvud and Tor Broström discuss the importance of an increased use of local guidelines on energy management whilst Ralf Kilian, Stefan Bichlmair and Martin Krus focus on heating systems suitable for ancient buildings using a case study of an 18th century monestary in Germany.  Richard Atkins, Rohinton Emmanuel and Cartsen Hermann present a case study of the energy retrofitting of Category B listed flats on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and Stavroula Thravalou, Maria Philokyprou and Amilios Michael consider adaptations to rural earthen architecture in Cyprus (Journal of Architectural Conservation, Vol 24, No 1, March 2018).
  • We learn that Shanghai brickworks were closely modelled on English ones in a paper by Changxue Shu of the University of Leuven, Belgium (International Journal of the Construction History Society, Vol 33, No 1, 2018)
  • Michael Heaton on how ‘mistakes’ in the NT owned Temple of Apollo at Stourhead have informed repair of the portico roof to the Pantheon (The Construction Historian, Issue 3, June 2018).
  • Charles Fairbank explaining how a fully functioning oil field using 19th century technology still works, and how the protection and management of the site continues as the Oil Museum of Canada (APT Bulletin, published by the Association for Preservation Technology International, Vol XLIX, No 1)
