South East Branch
Planning for the IHBC Annual School – Brighton 2020
South-East Branch welcomed its new Committee, following the AGM on 1 March, at a meeting on 13 March. The AGM Minutes have been posted on the IHBC Branch webpage along with details of the new Committee membership.
South-East Branch’s IHBC 2020 working group met on 24 April in Tunbridge Wells, 17 June in Reigate, and 31 July in Shoreham-by-Sea to further develop plans for the IHBC Annual School that they will be hosting in Brighton in June 2020; the focus will be on town centres and titled:
Old Towns: New Futures – Evolution| Economy| Experience.
The School will look at economics, place-making, international and technical aspects of successful town centres and will offer a range of speakers, activities and tours around this theme.
Further meetings are being planned in Brighton on 16 and 25 September, with more information forthcoming – the wider Branch membership is encouraged to participate.

Visit one of Britain’s greatest timber framed houses recently saved from the At Risk register to view the Mansion, the Tree House and current works at the Orangery.

Glenarm is constantly evolving estate, including salmon farming, clamping, pedigree shorthorn herd, water turbine generation, fudge factory, music festivals coupled with a never-ending programme of conservation works not only to the castle but the entire estate. South East Branch – Consistency in Decision Making ‘Getting it Right’

This is a case study based seminar, leading to lots of interesting discussion! Real life heritage cases are used, some of which ended up being determined by the Planning Inspectorate. These are presented with the basic facts, which are then discussed by the participants, with their views as to whether consent(s) should have been granted. It should prove very appropriate to Local Authority planning officers and private planning professionals.

Yorkshire Branch – Conservation and Stabilisation of Historic Fabric

Two complimentary disciplines are brought together to present with case studies, the structural conservation of historic buildings and structures, as seen through the eyes of two Conservation Accredited Engineer (CARE) Engineers and an AABC conservation accredited architect. Following discussion and lunch there’s an optional walking tour of relevant case studies in York, then on for informal networking over a drink together at a CAMRA pub.

London Branch – Day Conference: From Bauhaus to Brutalism
Royal College of Physicians, London

At the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, it is appropriate that we examine its legacy in a UK context and specifically our stock of post-war buildings. We will not only examine the significance of these buildings and places, but also how we can make them remain fit for purpose in term of their use, state of repair and thermal efficiency. Should we deal with them according to tried and tested conservation philosophy and techniques or do they demand a more radical approach?
Twentieth Century Buildings: Conservation Solutions was the subject of an IHBC London Conference in 2005. In returning to the theme, we will evaluate how time and attitudes have changed. A number of Case Studies will illustrate these issues and the difficult decisions which have to be taken, including improving thermal performance, replacement of original windows, and meeting current building regulations requirements.

North West Branch – Improving Accessibility – Overcoming the Barriers to Heritage

Heritage plays a key part in how we define our identity and, at a time of great debate over ideas of local and national identity, making heritage assets more accessible to a broader range of people is of great importance. Improving access to heritage can help promote a stronger sense of belonging and understanding of a place as well as stimulating wider public benefits such as improved health, wellbeing and job creation. Informed management of heritage assets can help to sustain and enhance those assets so that they become better used and valued both now and in the future.
The conference will explore these interrelated themes, focussing on how to successfully overcome the accessibility barriers that can exclude groups from enjoying and experiencing historic buildings or sites or participating in heritage activities. These barriers may be both intellectual as well as physical, and the conference will provide an opportunity to learn of new and innovative approaches to formal and informal learning about, and engaging with, heritage.
The conference will be of interest to planners, architects, developers, amenity societies, and all those who manage and care for the historic environment.

West Midlands Branch – Pre-fabs and System Builds: C20th Innovations in Construction in the West Midlands

Wake Green Road Prefabs
The Grade II listed Phoenix prefab bungalows in Wake Green Road were designed and manufactured by John Laing, McAlpine and Henry Boot, as part of a consignment of 2,428 prefabs supplied to the Ministry of Works under the Temporary Housing Programme. These temporary homes were only expected to be in use for ten years but 70 years on they are still in use. There are no other known surviving Phoenix prefabs still lived in which makes these extra special.
All but one of the prefabs are owned by Birmingham City Council.
Back in 2014, Birmingham Conservation Trust became involved and commissioned an Options Appraisal on behalf of the City Council to look at the potential for the Trust to take on one or more Prefabs to run as a museum and holiday lets.
This was followed up in 2016 by Lou Robson’s “Conservation plan: Wake Green Road Prefabs” which explored the context for the Prefabs and highlighted not just their rarity and their importance as a group, but also the rarity of their listing and the significance of their interior fittings.
In early 2017 the “Prefabulous” partnership was formed when BCT, the 20th Century Society and the Prefab Museum decided to join forces to work towards saving the Wake Green Prefabs. Funding was secured from Historic England was secured in May 2017 to allow the group to undertake a scoping scheme.
In spring 2018 the scheme was completed and negotiations are currently underway with Birmingham City Council to secure a future for these time-warp homes.

IHBC at the Climate Heritage Network – Global Launch
Edinburgh
The Climate Heritage Network Global Launch is a two-day program (Thursday 24th to Friday 25th October 2019) devoted to urgently mobilizing the cultural heritage sector for climate action in Europe and across the globe. The program will serve as a key catalyst for accelerating the ambition of culture and heritage actors to help the communities they work in to deliver on ambitions of the Paris Agreement. The launch builds on the Climate Heritage Mobilization @ Global Climate Action Summit held in San Francisco in 2018.
A key outcome of the program will be the launch of the new Climate Heritage Network, a mutual support network of city, state/provincial, regional, national and tribal historic preservation offices (together with related NGOs, universities and other organizations) committed to aiding their jurisdictions in tackling climate change and achieving the ambitions of the Paris Agreement.
