This role demands flexible working, and would suit highly organised and self-motivated individuals – as consultants and/or via service providers – able to operate remotely whilst liaising closely with the wider IHBC team of staff, trustees and officers, based across the UK. Travel across the UK may be required.  The IHBC is a professional body but it is also a small charity that relies on a substantial body of voluntary support. Staff are expected to recognise this distinctive character of the IHBC in their personal work patterns and approaches to their roles.

You will be line managed by the IHBC Director while also working closely with all the Institute’s staff and elected officers.

  • Term: 1-year fixed term
  • Hours: 2-3 days/week
  • Probation: 3 months from start.
  • Fee: on a consultancy basis as c.£200/day + expenses

Expectations for performance:

  • Re-commence and extend the IHBC’s Local Delivery Training pilot CPD programme for Branches.  Local Delivery CPD topics currently include Engineering, Curtilage, Care & retrofit.  Prospective topics include Design in Heritage Contexts.
  • Implement and manage a developing programme of IHBC-led events with online and in-person learning options offering building care and retrofit training in line with IHBC practice standards for sustainability, outlined HERE, and for retrofitting, outlined HERE.
  • Support IHBC interfaces with agreed existing and new training programmes in national heritage bodies across all Home Countries. See a sample precedent HERE.
  • In association with the above, review and contribute to the ongoing streamlining of the IHBC’s Affiliate membership application forms, systems and interfaces, as outlined HERE.
  • Identify opportunities and partnerships that build on existing Education Committee-linked programmes.
  • Promote #IHBC25 across all the above

General:

  • Liaise on specific and relevant conservation education, training and standards issues with national regulatory and other lead bodies with heritage roles
  • Liaise and inform Branch support as required

Your personal specifications:

  • A genuine and personal enthusiasm for built and historic environment conservation and especially for developing inspiring conservation training and CPD.
  • A pro-active networker all aspects of the delivery of training and support.
  • Possess a good knowledge and understanding of the functions and operations of the IHBC – local, regional and/or national – and of the historic environment sector, to ensure a timely assimilation into the role.
  • Dynamic, independent and innovative, in particular in your forward planning and use of time and resources
  • Independent and self-motivated while keeping all appraised of your progress and initiatives.
  • Effective communicator.
  • Hard working and adaptable by nature.
  • Experience in relevant aspects of learning, training and/or education would be an advantage, including the public sector, while the successful candidate will be willing and able to develop skills, enhance knowledge and guide experience.

Qualities you will need to demonstrate (essential):

  • Appreciative of conservation practice and values.
  • Understanding of conservation-related practice, standards and training, ideally as an accredited (Full or Associate) Member of the IHBC.
  • Energetic, self-motivated and capable of operating independently and with limited supervision.
  • Able to deliver and demonstrate effective outcomes, and analyse accordingly.
  • Experience of developing and managing training.
  • Enthusiastic about both traditional and innovative practices in conservation education and training.
  • Capacity to work closely with volunteers.
  • Strong communication skills (including digital) combined with the ability to develop and maintain excellent and effective relationships.

Qualities that will help in the post (recommended):

  • A basic level of proficiency in MS Office Suite is expected, and the aptitude for potential use of other pieces of software.
  • Awareness & understanding of social and digital media in promotion of training.
  • Driving licence.
