IHBC Chair expresses personal and sector loss following Elain Harwood’s demise

IHBC Chair David McDonald has reflected on the loss to the conservation, heritage and architectural communities following Elain Harwood’s recent demise.

…I was impressed by her encyclopaedic knowledge of architectural history…

IHBC Chair David McDonald said:  ‘I was deeply saddened to hear that Elain Harwood had passed away. I first met her in the mid 1980s when we were both students on the AA Building Conservation course. I was impressed by her encyclopaedic knowledge of architectural history which she continued to develop over the years through her work at English Heritage and then Historic England.’

‘Elain was unafraid about being a champion for the more controversial forms of Modernism including Brutalism, and her work has resulted in a number of well-received books.’

‘Throughout her busy life, she still had time to lecture in very lively style on her architectural passions including at IHBC events. She will be very sadly missed, but her legacy will live on in her writing’.
