The IHBC has launched its consultation web hub & resource offering context, updates and more on the prospect of an IHBC Petition for Charter – #IHBCPetitionforCharter – to help engagement on the issues around the IHBC seeking a Royal Charter – the ‘Petition for Charter’ – with funding for volunteer and Branch initiatives open too.

IHBC Chair David McDonald said: ‘I am very pleased to welcome this web hub as a resource to help the IHBC make its decision on whether to submit a Petition to the Privy Council for chartered status. It will provide useful information on procedure and progress as well as offering a focus for consultation responses’.
‘Mike Brown, IHBC President said, ‘I welcome the launch of this #IHBCPetitionforCharter web hub which includes lots of useful information for members on the prospect and implications for the institute in petitioning the Privy Council to Charter the IHBC. It’s been fascinating hearing the views of members at the recent Council, and their support for this next evolutionary stage in our development.
‘I hope that more and more members will review and absorb the content on the hub, ask pertinent questions and then take the opportunity to make your voice heard on this important topic’.
David Williams, external consultant facilitating the project, said: ’As an independent ‘sounding board’ and investigative researcher I’m helping answer the many questions raised in the #IHBCPetitionforCharter. Already I have undertaken background research of Chartered Institutes to get a baseline understanding of needs and costs for the process itself, and ongoing resources that may be required.’
‘It’s already been a useful exercise, and fascinating too, as I’ve been making contact with sample and relevant Institutes to find out more. They have been very supportive, and can now also be part of a growing network of support for IHBC.’
‘I look forward to supporting the IHBC as it progresses along any ‘path to charter’, for as long at members want, and hopefully I will meet many of you in the meetings coming up.’

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) is investigating the costs and benefits of securing chartered status. As well as undertaking research, the Institute is advancing internal and external consultations to gather initial thoughts from our members and stakeholders on impacts and options, including maintaining the status quo.
This work responds to a commitment agreed at our 2020 AGM when we adopted our Corporate Plan 2020-25, while further details are outlined below.
The IHBC may decide to submit a ‘Petition for Royal Charter’, subject both to high levels of support across members and stakeholders, and with the agreement of the Privy Council Office – the administrative lead on chartering. As with a planning application however, there is no guarantee that a petition for charter will succeed.
This web resource hosts our evolving understanding of a petition, successful or otherwise. It also serves as the consultation hub and reference for the institute’s members, our networks and the widest stakeholders in the process.
