No call-in for Liverpool regeneration project

DCLG has decided not to call in the Peel Holdings proposals for the ambitious £5.5bn redevelopment of an area of redundant Liverpool docklands.

The scheme is known as Liverpool Waters and is earmarked for what was once known as the Central Docks.

Both English Heritage and Unesco have voiced concern that the scheme will put the city’s World Heritage status at risk.

The plans were approved by Liverpool City Council in September before being submitted to the Department for Communities and Local Government for consideration.

A DCLG spokesman said: ‘Ministers have carefully considered all the relevant planning issues raised by the application and have concluded that they are content to leave the decision to the local planning authority which is best placed to determine the application.’
