CCT: Lead Theft at St John the Baptist, Inglesham, Wiltshire

CCT website 280417The Churches Conservation Trust has announced that on Tuesday 11th April they discovered that the lead roof covering had been stolen from Inglesham church.

The CCT writes:

This puts at risk the internationally important collection of wallpaintings saved by William Morris in the late 1800s.

A temporary roof covering was put in place within 24 hours of discovery to try to prevent water ingress damaging the wallpaintings and an alarm system is being fitted.

The Churches Conservation Trust will now work with local volunteers and supporters of the church  to raise funds to provide a permanent covering to safeguard the future of this much loved and historically significant church. It is estimated that £60,000 will need to be raised.
