The IHBC has launched the next stage of its online posting of the complete issues of Context, the historic environment practitioner’s best source for accessible expertise in contemporary conservation, as Context issues 21-44 are now online, covering the period from Autumn 1988 to December 1994.
IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly said: ‘For many IHBC members our Context journal is one of their institute’s most important contributions to knowledge. It offers both specialists and – as Wikipedia testifies – non-specialists, an expert and extremely accessible resource on all aspects of the diverse and interdisciplinary practice of built and historic environment conservation.’
‘Issues 21 to 44 take us from the days of Context as the ACO’s ‘Newsletter’, in March 1989, to a publication clearly recognisable as the predecessor of the IHBC’s journal Context, with Number 44, from December 1994, covering such practical matters as the challenges of listing modern buildings, and cast-iron shopfronts in Darlington!
These also as take us through some of the early history of the discipline, as members grapple with concerns that still resonate:
- Context’s March 1989 edition, Issue 21, sees Roger France introduce a ‘British Standard for Historic Buildings’, for which see http://ihbconline.co.uk/context/21/ and http://ihbconline.co.uk/context/21/#22/z
- The IHBC has only now, nearly 30 years later, issued its own conservation practice principles which can be seen in links from https://newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk/?p=15952
- At the same time, the IHBC’s support for BS 7913, the British Standard for building conservation, includes the IHBC offering copies at reduced rates. That initiative marked a step change in how the institute supported practice standards in mainstream construction and development.
- Context’s December 1993 edition, Issue 40, explores a case of curtilage at Kentwell Hall, Long Melford, offered by Richard Ward, Conservation Officer at Babergh DC, for which see http://ihbconline.co.uk/context/40/#32/z
- The IHBC is still fighting for curtilage to serve as a support for conservation outcomes, with recent challenges explored at https://newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk/?p=15338 and https://newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk/?p=15797
