IHBC welcomes Leicester’s MA in Urban Conservation as our newest ‘Recognised Conservation Course’, when ‘recognition boosts applicant numbers’.

logosThe IHBC has welcomed the University of Leicester’s ‘MA in Urban Conservation’ as the most recent ‘IHBC Recognised Conservation Course’, while course contributor Dr Richard Butler writes ‘Accreditation from the IHBC gives our graduates a competitive advantage in the employment market and is a strong endorsement from one of the world’s leading professional bodies for conservation specialists of the quality of our MA in Urban Conservation’.

The University of Leicester writes:

The University of Leicester’s MA in Urban Conservation has been officially recognised by the UK’s main professional conservation body.

This recognition, from the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), gives our graduates a competitive advantage in the employment market and is a strong endorsement from one of the world’s leading professional bodies for conservation specialists of the quality of our MA in Urban Conservation.

The Centre for Urban History is the UK’s leading research group for cities and our students are taught by experts in urban and architectural history, conservation and planning policy.

Dr Richard Butler and Professor Simon Gunn worked hard to gain this accreditation, awarded in 2017 and as a result the course has seen a rise in the number of applications, mostly from international students, to 25 for the new cohort.

The course brings history together with modernisation and is aimed at transforming cities for the 21st century while adapting and protecting historic buildings and townscapes. Graduates have gone on to work for a variety of public, private and charity sector organisations all around the world.

Dr Butler said: ‘The MA in Urban Conservation offers a professional qualification in managing the historic built environment in cities and towns around the world. It combines academic and theoretical approaches to understanding cities, urban governance, and architectural practice, with more practical aspects of managing and protecting heritage.’

‘Accreditation from the IHBC gives our graduates a competitive advantage in the employment market and is a strong endorsement from one of the world’s leading professional bodies for conservation specialists of the quality of our MA in Urban Conservation.’

Sean O’Reilly, Director of the IHBC said: ‘The IHBC is delighted to be able to add the University of Leicester’s MA in Urban Conservation to our list of Recognised Conservation Courses. This is a free, quality assurance scheme run by the Institute that ensures that course contents align with the key international standards for built and historic environment conservation practice.’

‘This IHBC Recognition means that any graduates can be confident that the learning opportunities offered have given them the best grounding possible for the next stage in their career ambitions, wherever they are in the world.  It also means that, as students, they can get even more support from us, with a one year free ‘taster’ membership of the IHBC offered to all students on IHBC Recognised Conservation Courses.’
