  • The next MATE sessions on 22 November (North Branch) and 28 November (London Branch
  • Reducing risk of fire in thatched buildings: recent research and new guidance’ organised in partnership with the South West Branch

websiteMATE webpage launched! Explore creative ways to guide your IHBC accreditation to Full Membership.
The IHBC has launched web guidance on its Membership Application Training Event (MATE) webpages, as a one-stop-shop to advise on our accreditation support sessions – visit mate.ihbc.org.uk

The purpose of the MATE (Membership Application Training Event) seminar is to help demystify the accreditation process. You will have the opportunity to talk with full members about your application and hear about how to approach the process.

If you would like to get involved with Branch activities & events, please consider volunteering for a branch officer post.  The positions are not onerous, communications happen mainly by email and Branches hold meetings quarterly.

November 2018

9 November
East Midlands Branch – An afternoon with Dr Charles Mynors
Lincoln

Dr Mynors has written extensively on the law in relation to the historic environment.

This afternoon will look at the issue of the extent of listing, covering:

  • How to determine curtilage
  • What is the curtilage of a building
  • The Wednesbury tests of reasonableness

There will also be an opportunity for questions from the floor.

This event is fully booked.

13 November
South West Branch – Reducing risk of fire in thatched buildings: recent research and new guidance
Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Headquarters, The Knowle, Clyst St George, Exeter, Devon, EX3 0NW

This one-day event, organised by Historic England, the Institute of Historic Building Conservation South West Branch, and Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, will explain the background to the research, present the results and new guidance, and consider the implications for listed buildings. The issues that arise in the aftermath of a fire will also be discussed and there will be a demonstration of fire-fighting techniques for thatched roofs.

The day is aimed primarily at conservation officers and other building conservation professionals, thatchers, thatched-property owners, fire-fighters and installers of wood-burning stoves.

North West Branch – AGM
Long Street Methodist Church & School, Middleton

The AGM will be in in Middleton, allowing us to explore the architecture of Edgar Wood with David Morris, followed by the AGM and Christmas meal.

There will be an afternoon tour of Edgar Wood buildings and an optional film showing.

North Branch – MATE session

We are holding Membership Application Training Event – the main aim of which is to assist people in upgrading their membership from either Affiliate/Associate to Full membership.

There will be a presentation from Kate Kendall, IHBC Education, Training & Standards Liaison Officer followed by small group discussions.

Kate Kendall said: ‘These events are a great way for prospective applicants to find out how to understand their skills, knowledge and experience in the context of IHBC membership criteria and accreditation.  And all this is free too, offered to anyone interested in IHBC membership as part of the IHBC’s charitable support for the care of the built and historic environment.’

London Branch – MATE session

Scotland Branch – AGM
Dundee

The AGM will follow a CPD day on the theme of Design in Dundee (UNESCO City of Design), a visit the new V&A Dundee to discuss the ways that members interface with design issues on a daily basis: design review, design awards etc.
