South East Branch
Planning for the IHBC Annual School – Brighton 2020
South-East Branch’s IHBC 2020 working group will meet on Monday 17 June 2019 19:00 – 21:00 at the Function Room, Market Stores, 2 High St, Reigate RH2 9AY to further develop plans for the IHBC Annual School that they will be hosting in Brighton in June 2020; the focus will be on town centres and titled, Old Towns: New Futures. The School will look at economics, place-making, international and technical aspects of successful town centres and will offer a range of speakers, activities and tours around this theme.
Further meetings will be planned in Surrey, West Sussex and also in Brighton – the wider Branch membership is encouraged to participate. See the Branch webpage for contact details

The purpose of the MATE (Membership Application Training Event) seminar is to help demystify the accreditation process. You will have the opportunity to talk with full members about your application and hear about how to approach the process.

Chiltern Open Air Museum

Chiltern Open Air Museum COAM has been carefully chosen as the museum has a varied and extremely fine collection of rescued buildings dating from the medieval period through to the 20th century. The buildings illustrate a wide range of structures and local building materials used at the various periods. The day will include formal Power Point presentations, material handling sessions and first hand observations of the buildings.
The mornings presentations will be based in Skippings barn and the afternoon will be spent looking at a wide range of buildings on site so come suitably dressed for the weather conditions of the day.

West Midlands Branch – The Conservation of 19th Century Urban Parks in the Potteries

A day on financing the conservation of 19th century urban parks in The Potteries.
The day will include presentations on and visits to the £4.5million Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People funding for the restoration of the pavilion, boathouse, canal bridges, lake and fountains at Hanley Park as well as discussion of other Parks for People projects in The Potteries.

Scotland Branch – Contemporary Design in Historic Places
Dunfermline

IHBC Scotland Branch 2019 CPD Training, jointly with Fife Council, takes the theme of contemporary design in historic places. Case studies in Dunfermline will stimulate discussion on issues that IHBC members regularly face in the adaptation of old buildings into new uses; the contemporary alteration or extension of a historic building.
Our venue, the world’s first Carnegie Library in Dunfermline re-opened in 2017 and is now also a museum, the Edinburgh Architectural Association Building of the Year and the holder of the RIAS Andrew Doolan prize. It is a place to inspire debate about the interface of new and old. We shall also learn about the future of the late medieval Abbot House next door, and the ongoing transformation of a large Dunfermline linen damask factory into a residential and commercial development.

North Branch – Citizen Jane: Battle For The City

Jane Jacobs’s 1960 book “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” sent shock-waves through the architecture and planning worlds, with its exploration of the consequences of the large-scale reconfiguration of cities which still resonates today. Jacobs was also an activist, involved in many fights to save historic New York City in an era of redevelopment in the 1960s. This film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival 2016 to mark the centenary of Jacobs’ birth and sets out to examine the city of today through the lens of one of its greatest champions.
Join IHBC North and Lichfields for a screening of this powerful documentary and take part in the Q&A afterwards. We hope to see you there.

North West Branch – Anthony Grimshaw retrospective, a joint event with Manchester Modernist Society
TBC
Born in 1936, Grimshaw formed Anthony Grimshaw Associates in Wigan, Lancashire in 1962. He had studied at Manchester Art School followed by Town Planning and Urban Design at Liverpool. The work of the office went from individual (strongly Modernist) house projects in the 1960s to schools and churches in the 1970s and ’80s, to Wigan’s first purpose-built hospice in the 1990s, and more recently church conservation work. His £57,500 garden gazebo in the grounds of a Modernist house at Alderley Edge – also designed by Grimshaw – won an RIBA award, together with the very first Architects’ Journal Small Projects Award in 1996. Two recent conservation projects were shortlisted by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings for their John Betjeman Award and there were several mentions in Pevsner over the years.

West Midlands Branch – Pre-fabs and System Builds: C20th Innovations in Construction in the West Midlands

Presentations on the Wake Green Prefabs and Prefabulous, and Presentation on 20th century construction – system builds
The Grade II listed Phoenix prefab bungalows in Wake Green Road were designed and manufactured by John Laing, McAlpine and Henry Boot, as part of a consignment of 2,428 prefabs supplied to the Ministry of Works under the Temporary Housing Programme. These temporary homes were only expected to be in use for ten years but 70 years on they are still in use. There are no other known surviving Phoenix prefabs still lived in which makes these extra special.
All but one of the prefabs are owned by Birmingham City Council.
Back in 2014, Birmingham Conservation Trust became involved and commissioned an Options Appraisal on behalf of the City Council to look at the potential for the Trust to take on one or more Prefabs to run as a museum and holiday lets.
Wake Green Road Prefabs
In early 2017 the “Prefabulous” partnership was formed when BCT, the 20th Century Society and the Prefab Museum decided to join forces to work towards saving the Wake Green Prefabs. Funding was secured from Historic England was secured in May 2017 to allow the group to undertake a scoping scheme.This was followed up in 2016 by Lou Robson’s “Conservation plan: Wake Green Road Prefabs” which explored the context for the Prefabs and highlighted not just their rarity and their importance as a group, but also the rarity of their listing and the significance of their interior fittings.
In spring 2018 the scheme was completed and negotiations are currently underway with Birmingham City Council to secure a future for these time-warp homes.
