The IHBC London Branch conference for 2019, bauhaustobrutalism.ihbc.org.uk – #IHBCBauhaustoBrutalism, will offer critical CPD around the thorny but topical issue of ‘conserving post-war buildings and places’, over a programme of talks, challenges, networking and more, with content ranging from thermal performance to building regulations, with the day sponsored by Lichfields and taking place at the Royal College of Physicians on Wednesday 2 October.

At the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, it is appropriate that we examine its legacy in a UK context and specifically our stock of post-war buildings. We will not only examine the significance of these buildings and places, but also how we can make them remain fit for purpose in term of their use, state of repair and thermal efficiency.
Should we deal with them according to tried and tested conservation philosophy and techniques or do they demand a more radical approach?
‘Twentieth Century Buildings: Conservation Solutions’ was the subject of an IHBC London Conference in 2005. In returning to the theme, we will evaluate how time and attitudes have changed. A number of Case Studies will illustrate these issues and the difficult decisions which have to be taken, including improving thermal performance, replacement of original windows, and meeting current building regulations requirements.
