IHBC’s ‘CPD boost’, out of Context: ‘Can the heritage of Europe help to integrate the UK?’

coinWith Brexit never far from the current news headlines, the recent Context article by Sabine Coady Schabitz arguing for the UK to become a leader in heritage action – and follow up on spirit of European Cultural Heritage Year 2018 celebrations – may be of special interest to heritage professionals.

Schabitz traces back our understanding of civil service views on heritage to the 19th century, and through to the first European Architectural Heritage Year (1975) which brought in a sense of shared awareness and activity across Europe.

Some ‘water cooler’ questions with colleagues may be:

  • European Architectural Heritage Year (1975) – what did the UK do?
  • European Architectural Heritage Year (2018) – did the UK make the most of it?
  • ‘Feeling European: is that still timely? Should heritage focus on the global instead? Or is it more important to strengthen the local and regional, where the lived experience for most people is?’
  • What is transcultural heritage, and how does this affect different regions of Europe?
  • How can heritage unite Europe, and what role might the UK have in this?
