The group of Greater Manchester locals who have been battling to save the Hulme Hippodrome have launched a Crowdfunding campaign to protect the historic venue, as The Manchester Evening News reports.

The Manchester Evening News writes:

A local group are battling to restore and save the historic theatre.

The group of Greater Manchester locals who have been battling to save the Hulme Hippodrome have launched a Crowdfunding campaign to protect the historic venue.

The late Tony Wilson’s son Oli Wilson is part of the group fighting to protect the space and ‘save it from developers’.

The Save Hulme Hippo Crowdfunding campaign outlines the vision for the building’s future, with plans including a museum.

They want to turn to transform the space into a multi-use venue, with a community focus at its heart….

The new-look Hulme Hippodrome would also have a cafe, library and book store, a bike hub and workshop, and a community wellbeing centre.

The Grade II-listed theatre building had recently been put up for auction for £950,000, but was withdrawn prior to the auction.

It’s not yet known the reason for the lot being withdrawn in advance, but a campaign group is now scrambling to get the venue into community ownership.

The Hippodrome is believed to have a viable future by the Theatres Trust if it is rescued in time.

The Trust has placed the venue on its Theatres at Risk register every year since the list began in 2006.

The neighbouring Playhouse theatre was saved and is now home to NIAMOS.

A Crowdfunding campaign launched just yesterday has already reached more than 50 per cent of its target of £10,000….
