New routes into heritage careers and support roles
Historic England offers a variety of apprenticeships across heritage and non – heritage roles. Our apprenticeships vary in length but will always last for at least 12 months. We are proud to offer apprenticeships from Level 2 upwards and up to Level 7. All of our apprenticeships offer you the chance to develop real work experience combined with off the job training, supported by one of our approved training providers. You will usually spend 80% of your time learning through your day to day role at one of our offices and 20% of your time attending college. (perhaps one day per week or on through a block release approach). Sometimes, your designated learning coach may visit you at your workplace.
Are our apprenticeships right for you?
Most importantly, our apprenticeships are open to everyone. When considering applications, we don’t always look for the most qualified applicant. We consider who would gain the most from the learning opportunity provided by the apprenticeship. We also want you to make a fully informed decision about whether an apprenticeship is right for you, and so we invite shortlisted applicants to spend time in our offices during their application process.
We do ask that you share our enthusiasm for how heritage connects communities, and this applies to our non – heritage apprenticeships as well.
There are a variety of roles and skills that make up our teams, from Facilities Management to Archiving; IT to Conservation; Human Resources to Archaeology and more besides. We work together to protect our most important historic places; helping people to care for, enjoy and celebrate them.
Which route you take to your chosen career – whether it be through ‘traditional’ higher education, an apprenticeship or something else, depends on your learning style and your personal circumstances. An apprenticeship leads to officially recognised qualifications while obtaining real work experience and learning, and you’ll be paid a salary while you learn.
While we can’t guarantee a permanent role at the end of your apprenticeship, we do support you to apply for roles within Historic England and will encourage you to look for suitable positions. We will also support you with your on-going career at the end of your apprenticeship through various employability skills training, regardless of whether you choose to stay with us.

Geospatial Survey Technician Apprenticeship
Learn what it means to be a Geospatial Surveyor, using scanning and photogrammetry equipment to capture hundreds of images to create detailed 3D models of historic objects, sites, landscapes and places used for analysis of their construction and protection.
Business Administration Apprenticeship
Gain administration experience while playing an important support role in our organisation. You will learn on the job with our Corporate Services teams and understand and contribute to key projects at Historic England.
Historic Environment Advice Assistant Apprenticeship

Customer Service Apprenticeship
Learn how to provide high quality service to our customers, including the public. Help our customers ‘Enrich the List’. The List is a record of listed places, and has over 400,000 entries, from tower blocks to cathedrals and is filled with insights of England’s spectacular historic places.
What we do for you
We want to equip you with all the learning and development you need to successfully complete your apprenticeship and gain a recognised qualification. You’ll be assigned a Line Manager and Mentor who will actively participate and support you on your journey with us. This support could include time to complete off the job training and providing you with opportunities to use what you have learnt in your work.
Investing in you
We have developed a suite of learning for our apprentices which starts with your induction. We also offer lots of general skills training including time management, fast effective reading courses, strength based development and transformation needs.
Resources available to you
You’ll be encouraged to further your skills with our online learning platform, available to all Historic England staff. We hold events for our apprentices such as lunch and learn sessions and encourage you to participate and learn new skills while connecting with your fellow apprentices.
