IHBC welcomes Highland Historic Buildings Trust launch of local church digital guide, via John Duncan, 2022 IHBC Marsh Award Winner

The IHBC is delighted to welcome a new initiative highlighted by IHBC 2022 Marsh Award winner john Duncan  Highland Historic Buildings Trust (HHBT) launch of local church guide digital resource, with IHBC Marsh Award Winner John Duncan, The ‘Easter Ross and Black Isle Churches Heritage Trail’.

… the website will make a significant contribution to the information publicly available…

John Duncan, IHBC-Marsh Award Winner 2022, said: ‘With the Church of Scotland threatening to close so many of its churches, it is more important than ever to raise awareness of the significance of its historic buildings and to encourage more efforts to protect them.’

The HHBT noted in its press release that: ‘The homepage of the website features a large interactive map programmed with ‘hotspots’ identifying the survey sites, with each site linked via the website database to images and a page of information about the property. The website also features a simple grid list page of all the properties, so that users can scroll quickly through the list and summaries to find what they seek.’

John continued: ‘This survey was initiated by the Highland Historic Buildings Trust and Jim Mackay of the Kirkmichael Trust to provide an informative digital guide to a particularly interesting group of Church of Scotland sites in Easter Ross and the Black Isle. Some 34 churches and chapels are featured, from ruins dating back to medieval times to buildings still in use, along with burial grounds with many interesting funerary monuments, all within short distances of each other and most easily accessible. We hope that the website will make a significant contribution to the information publicly available on the built heritage of the area and that it will result in more of these historic places of worship becoming appreciated and more widely known.’

The website links to the IHBC website along with many others related to built heritage, providing easy access for visitors to the site from local heritage groups, community councils, and schools.
