The IHBC’s 2017 Annual General Meeting saw the election of two new trustees to national posts in the institute – Jill Kerry (0472MEM NI) as IHBC Treasurer, and Andrew Shepherd, as IHBC Education Secretary, (1532MEM YO) – and new Branch representatives, while also re-electing those continuing in their roles, and thanking our outgoing officers.
IHBC Chair James Caird said: ‘Of course we are always sad to lose longstanding, proactive officers as volunteers – and our treasured Treasurer Richard Morrice fits that bill more than many – as well as more recently active volunteers that have opened up new opportunities for us, such as past Education Secretary Bridget Turnbull. Bridget is standing down for the best of reasons: too much work in her consultancy role, while Branch representatives Jane Jackson, James Webb and David Andrews have also stood down.
‘We’ve thanked trustees and volunteers at the AGM – Richard especially for his many years of service and support – but it is also both very good and extremely important to bring new lead officers into the fold. This is especially valuable for our national officer posts, and when both are practicing architects: Jill Kerry, former Branch representative for Northern Ireland, as Treasurer, and Andrew Shepherd, formerly Director on the Architectural Association’s IHBC-recognised Conservation Course there, and most recently a member of our Membership Committee.’
But it’s not all good news, as clearly the demands we continue to make on our volunteers are too high, as witnessed by how few new Branch representatives are taking up trustee roles. A major aspiration for the IHBC in the coming years of our Corporate Plan, and of my tenure, will be addressing the pressures on volunteers through developing our governance in line with the lessons we are learning from IHBC+’.
