National Trust response to Prime Minister’s speech on recovery

The National Trust has responded to the Prime Minister’s speech concerning recovery plans, advocating a ‘build back better’ approach that ‘will only happen if the Government ‘takes this opportunity to think differently, embraces a genuinely holistic approach to recovery and backs this up with the major investment needed to deliver it.’…

The National Trust writes:

Ingrid Samuel, Historic Environment Director at the National Trust said:

“The Government faces a clear choice with its recovery plans. We can learn from the last financial crisis and choose an approach for renewal that benefits people, the economy and the environment.  Or, we can revert to quick, high carbon fixes and a planning free for all.

“We heard today about beautiful and low carbon homes, and £40M for conservation projects, but also of a rush to relax planning rules, and promote grey infrastructure – suggesting the Government has yet to fully embrace a clear vision for  a green recovery.

“Lockdown has shown us that access to nature and green spaces, our heritage and culture are vital for the wellbeing of millions of people across the country. Any changes to the planning system that delivers these things must be very carefully considered.

“We have a chance to build back better, to create neighbourhoods that are fit for the future, with access to green spaces, a sense of local heritage and identity, and greener streets for walking and cycling. This will only happen if the Government takes this opportunity to think differently, embraces a genuinely holistic approach to recovery and backs this up with the major investment needed to deliver it.”
