IHBC features ‘Heritage from (the RoI) doorstep’: Monaghan birthplace of Charles Gavan Duffy threatened, as historic links reviewed

Proposals are under consideration to demolish the birthplace of Charles Gavan Duffy  – nationalist, Victoria Premier and possible slave trader – in the Republic of Ireland’s (RoI), Monaghan town, reports the Northern Sound.

… building was of ‘little architectural significance’…

… research done into reports that Charles Gavan Duffy had been involved in the slave trade…

Northern Sound  writes:

Monaghan County Council is proposing to demolish the birthplace of Charles Gavan Duffy in Monaghan town.

The planned redevelopment of south Dublin Street and the Backlands would see the demolition of Number 10 Dublin Street.

He was a prominent Irish nationalist and Young Irishman, who became Premier of the Australian state of Victoria after his emigration.

Monaghan County Council has today published a notice proposing the removal of the building from the list of protected structures.

A report commissioned by the Council found the building was of “little architectural significance”

The Council is asking anyone with observations on the proposal to make a submission before February 25th.

At this month’s meeting of the county council the executive stated a plaque would be erected to recognise the birthplace, however, Sinn Féin’s Seán Conlon said he wanted research done into reports that Charles Gavan Duffy had been involved in the slave trade before this was done.

More information on the proposal can be found here.
