IHBC’s virtual Council to elect Institute’s President – Supporters to Full Members welcome 19 October: Details and statement

IHBC Council, the IHBC’s inclusive advisory and training body is responsible for electing the President (and Vice President) of the Institute. and the first election will be held on 19 October, with all IHBC member categories welcome to Council and able to vote in this election.

Mike Brown, IHBC President and nominee for the new post of IHBC President and Council Chair, writes his message for the election:

‘Many of you will know of me through attendance at many Annual Schools and my previous roles for the Institute, including its Chairman, chair of its Policy Committee and Communications and Outreach Committee, and chair of the Context Editorial Board. So, I am very committed to the work of the IHBC.

I have played a full role in developing the new governance arrangements including creating the Board of Trustees (the executive function) and Council (the representative and advisory functions).  The President’s responsibility is to chair Council, but just as importantly, to communicate the views of Council (and therefore the membership) to the Board on any given subject.  The President has an important function, therefore, in ensuring that there is an effective and balanced relationship between the Board and Council such that the executive arm acts in harmony with the wishes of the membership and the branches.

This is likely to be a very important issue over the next two years (the term of office for the President) as the IHBC weighs the issues that will emerge from our decision, approved in the Corporate Plan, to explore the options for achieving chartered status.  That debate will begin in earnest in the New Year. I will endeavour to visit as many branches as possible to help facilitate that debate and hear first hand your views.

I will make it my duty to ensure that, – along with the many other issues that will, no doubt, come forward from time to time, – that you, the membership of the IHBC, is kept fully appraised of progress and the implications of this constitutional reform and have every opportunity to have your say.

So, if you too share my love of Britain’s heritage, my deep commitment to the IHBC as the UK’s heritage professional body and my democratic instincts as to how it should progress, I urge you to become an active member of Council and lend me your vote.  Voting will take place electronically at the next Council meeting, on line, on Wednesday 19 October 2022.  Full details to follow from the National Office.
