Pickles unveils design for Victoria Cross paving stone

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has unveiled the design of a commemorative First World War paving stone, set for neighbourhoods across the UK.

A design from London architect Charles MacKeith was selected for the paving stone, which will commemorate recipients of the Victoria Cross during the First World War in over 400 communities.

Installed into regions with links to Victoria Cross recipients, the paving stone will also incorporate an electronic reader allowing visitors to scan the memorial for further information.

Pickles said: ‘The winning paving stone is a fitting tribute to the centenary of the war and will keep the memory of local war heroes alive for hundreds more years to come.’

Brent and Mid Sussex DC will receive the first paving stones in August 2014 to represent the date when the first two Victoria Crosses were awarded in the First World War.
