IHBC & partners in Belfast, 9 May: Preparing for the 2018 IHBC School as John Edwards says: ‘It’s Not Just Retrofit’

Retrofit 2017 websiteThe IHBC Northern Ireland (NI) Branch and partners, the UAHS (Ulster Architectural Heritage Society) and RSUA (Royal Society of Ulster Architects), host a ‘Retrofit’ presentation and discussion led by IHBC trustee John Edwards in Belfast on 9 May, from 5-7pm, linked to planning for the Branch’s hosting of the IHBC Annual School, which will take place in Belfast in June 2018.

IHBC NI Branch Chair Andrew McClelland said: ‘As well as welcoming the IHBC’s Education Committee to Belfast on 9 May, to help us lay the groundwork for the Branch’s hosting of the Annual School in June 2018, we are delighted to be able to join with some of the Branch’s longstanding partners here, the UAHS and the RSUA in hosting a talk and discussion led by IHBC trustee john Edwards on retrofit and how older buildings can be damaged by inappropriate attempts to make them energy efficient.’

John Edwards writes:

Older buildings are at risk from attempts to make them energy efficient. Everyone in the property and construction industry needs to understand that the one size fits all approach is not the answer for millions of older buildings – that are treated as if they were modern.

At this event, introduced and chaired by Professor John Edwards, Guest Editor of IHBC’s Context special edition on Green Retrofit we will explore:

  • Fundamental differences between new and older buildings
  • Comparing and contrasting energy efficiency assessment methods
  • Making existing fabric more energy efficient – without retrofit
  • A combined process of retrofit and other energy efficiency works – finding optimum solutions
  • Role of Building Regulations
  • Role of British and European Standards
  • Guidance and Tools – good and bad
  • Why dampness is one of the most important issues to understand
  • Competencies required from individuals
  • Quality Management on site

Members of UAHS and IHBC: £10; non-members: £15.
