Historic England has announced that Conservation Principles, offering guidance on its approach to its own research and advice on designation, planning and conservation, is under consultation, closing 2 February 2018.
James Caird, IHBC Chair said: ‘The IHBC welcomes the opportunity to respond to the consultation on a revised version of this important document. As all will know from our own joint ‘Conservation Professional Practice Principles’, issued earlier this year, we are keenly interested in principles that work for the social and economic benefit of England, in addition to the well-being of our heritage. With wide-scale participation we hope such a document will emerge’.

Conservation Principles is being updated to give you information that is easier to read and more closely aligned with the National Planning Policy Framework.
The consultation is aimed at anyone with an interest in how Historic England carries out research, advises the government on heritage designations, or provides advice on planning and conservation of the historic environment.
You can access the documentation through our website, along with an overview of key changes. Please provide any comments on the document using our online questionnaire by 2 February 2018.
Key changes to the document include:
- The document has been made more concise and the language has been clarified to make it more accessible and compelling
- The explanation of how we understand significance has been recast to focus on the ‘Heritage Interests’ (Historic, Architectural, Archaeological and Artistic) used in the legislation and planning policies that we and our partners implement, whilst retaining reference to the four heritage values presented in the original document
- Content that has since been reissued elsewhere has been deleted, making the document shorter.
The survey explains:
‘This consultation invites comments on the draft revision of Conservation Principles for Sustainable Management of the Historic Environment (10th November 2017). Comments will be accepted until 2nd February 2018.

Conservation Principles is being updated to set out Historic England’s approach to conservation in a format that is more accessible and aligned with the language of the National Planning Policy Framework and legislation. This consultation is an opportunity for anyone with an interest in how Historic England carries out research, advises the government on heritage designations, or provides advice on planning and conservation of the historic environment to influence the principles we use and the way we understand and conserve the significance of our shared heritage.
The questionnaire asks you to comment on each section in order with final comments relating to the document in general. Whilst the text boxes in the questionnaire will expand to accept your comments it will help us to take comments into consideration if they are concise and state the paragraphs they relate to are clearly identified.
