IHBC update on MATE’s – Membership Application Training Events:  Let Kate know if your Branch, network or business needs a MATE!

IHBC MATES event with CgMsKate Kendall, IHBC lead on our ‘MATE’ sessions – the Membership Application Training Events – offers her update on your Institute’s progress in supporting applications for conservation accreditation, and calls for IHBC Branches and heritage networks and businesses interested in free MATE support events to let her know at LETS@ihbc.org.uk.

Kate said: ‘Following on from successful rounds of introductory seminars in 2015-16, we are renewing the service so we can help the next cohort of applicants with their membership applications – both for Full Member and IHBC Associate.’

‘We know that applications can seem at first like a daunting process. However, the MATE sessions are designed to help you better understand the process and ease you along the way to IHBC membership and formal, professional accreditation with us.  We’re here to support your application, and want you to succeed.’

After a recent MATE event at CgMs, IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly said: ‘In these MATE sessions we offer talks and exercises to break down the application process, explore the IHBC’s Areas of Competence and our Conservation Cycle model, while also answering specific queries and concerns on cases and training priorities.’

‘This ensures that applicants from any discipline or sector can get a common grounding in how the IHBC assesses interdisciplinary conservation standards in line with established national and international conservation standards and models – notably from ICOMOS and the World Bank.’

‘Of course, as these events are free training and CPD, in line with our charitable obligations we have to give priority to IHBC members, networks and supporters, including commercial practices signed up to our HESPR quality assurance scheme.  So MATE sessions are yet another benefit when you sign up to built and historic environment conservation support and standards with the IHBC.’

Kate writes:

Are you thinking about making your full membership application to IHBC? Not sure where to start? Come along to a local Branch or business MATE session: IHBC’s ‘Membership Application Training Event’!

The increasingly popular MATE sessions are being hosted in Branches, groups and businesses over the coming months.  The sessions help you understand the application and assessment processes and guide you on skills development – including CPD priorities – and on approach the all-important case studies that demonstrate your conservation competence.

These popular sessions offer the opportunity to talk with IHBC staff, colleagues and Full members – local and national – and to seek their advice.

Following on from two sessions in the London Branch this summer feedback has been positive and we want to build on this working with the other Branches and conservation interests across the UK.

Feedback  includes:

  • ‘Really well organised. Advice and experience of Kate and competency group leaders second to none and extremely useful! Really appreciate all of the time they gave for the training session.’
  • ‘It was valuable to realise how varied the interests were and the perception of obstacles in submitting. In part it made it sound more straight-forward.

Kate is heading to York at the end of the month to host a session in partnership with the Yorkshire Branch on the 25 November at the Kings Manor.

Seminars are confirmed in the following Branches (with dates and booking to be finalised):

  • North West
  • West Midlands

Other Branches, businesses and networks are hosting formal and informal sessions too, including Scotland.

It could be your New Year’s resolution to finally get your application in and working with your Branch MATE could be just the kick start you need!
