The IHBC has announced two leading speakers for the legal section of the 2019 Day School ‘Heritage, Risk & Resilience: Confronting conservation calamities’ in Nottingham on Friday 5 July, as it welcomes a special double-act of top lawyers Charles Mynors and Nigel Hewitson looking at the legal issues around conservation calamities.
Mynors and Hewitson will jointly look at legal issues associated with the historic environment calamities explored all across the 2019 Nottingham Day School: buildings falling into disrepair, being criminally damaged, collapsing accidentally or ‘accidentally’, or being burnt down, or even demolished for safety reasons (or ‘safety reasons’).
IHBC East Midlands Branch School Organizing Committee Chair Justin Webber said: ‘Without a firm understanding of the legal framework that underpins engagement in heritage at risk, conservation specialists are unlikely to be able to make meaningful progress. A complex and potentially less legible area of work, this content makes sure that Annual School delegates can deepen their understanding of the legal aspects that are at play.’
‘It is rare that potential speakers are so obvious, but in this area a pair instantly jump out. Dr Charles Mynors and Nigel Hewitson are the authors of ‘Listed Buildings and Other Heritage Assets’ – a textbook that rightly dominates the library of anyone needing to better understand the interface between building conservation and the law. They each benefit from a wealth of experience from working in local government, the private sector and on central government commissions. Currently lecturing at the University of Oxford, the University of Bath and Oxford Brookes University, they are outstanding public speakers who bring humour and warmth to their talks.’

The School will cover all manner of possible risk to heritage and look at how risk can be managed and resilience developed. The focus of the School will include Fire, Structural failure, Mitigating the crime and terrorism risk, Heritage at Risk, Flooding and Law & Philosophy.
