IHBC’s new Context out now: Learning from New Towns, in the UK and beyond

The latest issue of the IHBC’s membership journal Context is now out, themed around exploring and learning from the ‘New Towns’ movement across and beyond the UK as it takes a ‘birds-eye’ view of the conservation contexts and challenges in their management and enhancement.

Context No. 162 features stories from Germany, France and the UK, and reflects on the legacy of the Bauhaus movement and socialist architectural styling in central Europe.

Readers will gain an appreciation for the origin of new towns: ‘History seems to show that urban civilisation depends on building new towns. In rediscovering how to do it we need to celebrate and learn from the examples around us’.

As with every issue of Context, this number also carries the much-admired regular features such as periodical updates, ‘Periodically’, book reviews, officers’ reports and much more.

Articles include:

  • Post-war new towns in Germany -Michael Asselmeyer
  • Socialist realism in a post-war Czechoslovak new town- Andrew McClelland
  • The complex heritage of French new towns- Frédéric Theulé
  • Saving new town heritage- Bob Colenutt and Sabine Coady Schaebitz
  • The return of garden towns and garden villages- Katie Parsons
  • Harlow and its civic society- Tony Evans
  • Capturing the significance of a designed city- Simon Peart
  • Community matters: Lewes Neighbourhood Plan- Michael Scammell
  • Controversy at the Commandery and other tales- Tegan Cornah, Tim Cornah, Emily Hathaway and Sheena Payne Lunn
  • Historic steel-framed windows- Sophie Godfraind
