Established in the early 1994, the Heritage Open Days is an England’s way of contributing to the European Heritage Days by celebrating the regions culture and much more through the festival.
Roots
The Council of Europe and European Commission set up the Europe Heritage Days in 1991 to raise awareness and appreciation of the rich and diverse Europe’s cultural assets as well as the need for care and protection for posterity.
The central principle behind the days was simple and compelling.
They would throw open all the doors to historic buildings and monuments especially those that are normally closed to the public. Currently, they are held in September in almost 50 signatory states to the original European Cultural Convention.
