IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘This round of the ‘Jobs etc’ service includes a strong showing from a range of less familiar primary disciplines for our conservation professionals.’

‘These include the Conservation Scientist/Surveyor post from Floydconsult, and Pegasus Group’s call for a Senior Heritage Consultant (Archaeology), as well as SLR’s triplet of posts of Principal Archaeology & Heritage Consultant, Senior Archaeology & Heritage Consultant, and the familiar role of ‘Historic Buildings Heritage Consultant.’

‘At the same time WSP’s search for ‘Heritage and Placemaking Specialists’ shows that there is a solid and continuing need for the broader placemaking and ‘townscaping’ skills linked to familiar conservation competences.’

‘Balancing these we have again a long list of public sector roles tied to – or evolved from – the historic conservation officer, with its balanced integration of regulatory control and heritage-led intervention.’

‘These include calls for Conservation Officers from Somerset West & Taunton, Hastings, and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.’

‘More specific variants include Croydon (Senior Project Officer (Conservation)); Cherwell (Senior/Conservation Officer); Hackney (Conservation and Design Officer), Hull (Principal Urban Design and Conservation Officer) and Kirklees’ interesting reach into the management of the natural environment with its search for a ‘Team Leader – Conservation, Design, Trees and Ecology’.’

‘While these are all familiar variants of the Conservation Officer role, other posts this round also recognise the broader place-management and planning traditions from – and alongside – which  the historic role evolved.’

‘Manchester City Council’s call for a Planning Officer (Heritage and Urban Design) and Warrington’s search for an Urban Design and Heritage Officer reflect that thinking.  Mixing those operational threads with a project focus is PKHT’s call for a Perth Lower City Mills Development Officer.’

‘Clearly all these Jobs etcposts reflect the exceptionally wide spectrum of relevant roles encompassed and skills seen in the IHBC Areas of Competence and the Conservation Cycle.’

‘Those diverse practice areas are also reflected in the IHBC’s MATE application support sessions and guidance, as well as in the principles we use to assess interdisciplinary competence in line with international conservation practice standards.’

‘That same breadth is also reflected in the two outliers for this round: Hutton + Rostron’s ‘Specialist Historic Building Surveyor’ and The Diocese of Sheffield’s call for a Church Buildings Officer / Church Buildings Team Leader.’
